It has been a while since we all were allowed to travel. Luckily me and my girlfriend made our last trip shortly before all travel restrictions were put in place.
Our last trip led us to Sri Lanka. And it was a very good one 🙂
We arrived in Sri Lanka in the afternoon at the airport in Colombo. That’s why we decided to stay there for two days to acclimatize. But to be honest one night would have been enough. Colombo is a very hectic city where except of the market and some temples is not much to see.
From Colombo we continued our journey towards Kandy by train where we had also two nights. Kandy is a very nice city with a lot of sights. The easiest way of getting around in the city and to the close sights such as the big white Buddha Statue (Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue) or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is by TukTuk.
From Kandy we also wanted to drive to Sigiriya to climb up the Pidurangala rock. That rock is located directly in front of the Lions Rock. The difference is that it is not so expensive to get up and gives you the view on the Lions Rock.
To get there we decided to book a private driver who took us there. It was a good decision because on our way up there he stopped at some very nice places we might not have found without him.
Our next stop after Kandy was Ella and of course we decided to take the train again to get a view on one of the most beautiful train rides of the world. And that might be true. The train takes you though the highlands of Sri Lanka across wonderful tea plantations with an epic view above the country.
Once we arrived in Ella we were starving and wanted to eat something as soon as possible. By checking TripAdvisor we found a place called “Matey Hut”. That’s were we ate in Ella. The food was awesome and the best Sri Lankan curry we had on our whole trip.
The next day we visited the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory and the Mahamevnawa Monastery which was under construction but a very impressive building with a nice view above Ella. The second day we wanted to see the Nine Arche Bridge and the Little Adam’s Peak. With the support of a racing TukTuk driver we were lucky to see a train crossing the bridge as well 😉
After two nights in Ella we continued our journey towards Dickwella. This was a short-term decision during our trip. We knew that we wanted to spent the last days of our trip at the sea but did not know where. Dickwella was a lonely beach which is directly located next to Hiriketiya Beach where I thought I could surf for the first time on our trip. Unfortunately the waves where too small so that we had a few days just chilling at the beach.
After Dickwella we drove to Midigama where we stayed at the Hot Tuna which is located in front of the surf breaks Lazy Left and Lazy Right. That was the perfect location for surfing because I could check the waves from the balcony, grab my board and jump into the sea 🙂 Pure fun and happiness for 6 days.
All other surf locations like Ram’s or Plantations are also just a quick TuTuk ride away. Ram’s is more for the experienced surfer with a shallow reef. The other ones mentioned are for intermediates as well as for beginners who know how to paddle out.
It was also a good location because there are several surf shops and rentals around where you can get your gear. This time I traveled without my gear because surfing was not the only activity on this trip.
We ended our journey back in Colombo from where we headed back home after almost 3 weeks of a perfect trip.
